This rare and valuable piece is an antique pre-1900 Saxon cloak, worn by ethnic Germans from Transylvania at high ceremonies and church services. The cloak is made of black wool fabric that has been expertly pleated by hand, creating a unique texture and shape that is both striking and elegant.
The wool fabric is bordered with black velvet that has been hand-embroidered with black thread, adding a touch of intricate detail and texture to the edges of the cloak. On the inside, the cloak is decorated with red fabric, creating a stunning contrast between the black exterior and the vibrant red interior.
Measuring 99 cm (39 inches) in length and 45 cm (17.7 inches) at the base, this cloak is a universal size that can be worn by a variety of body types. The pleated design creates a loose and flowing shape that drapes beautifully over the body, creating a sense of regal elegance.
Despite its age, this Saxon pleated cloak is in excellent vintage condition, having been perfectly preserved and professionally cleaned. There are no tears or repairs needed, and the only signs of wear are some slight discoloration due to its age. It is so well-preserved that it is still wearable and would be a valuable addition to any museum or collector’s collection.
In the last photo, you can see a complete Saxon costume from the 19th century with this pleated cloak, giving you a sense of the cultural and historical significance of this rare and beautiful piece.
