The Day of the Dead is one of my favorite holidays! This sparkly headpiece would be gorgeous with a costume, at any party, celebration, festival or photoshoot. This headpiece measures 5″ at top of crown. Made of a variety of airbrushed variegated hand knotted cable/zip ties, metal appliqués, flowers, glass rhinestones, and wears easily on a satin headband with a center comb for a secure and comfortable fit.
*Why do I use zip/cable ties?*
I realize this is a strange material to make a crown out of.
It has nothing to do with the cost of them – it’s because they are lightweight.
A friend and fellow designer asked me to make 12 headpieces for her upcoming runway show. She wanted the headpieces to be dramatic and look like large gold halos to compliment her beautiful couture gowns, but was concerned with the weight of the headpieces – they would need to be light. The models that were participating in her fashion show were all ages 12 and 13, and for many of the girls it would be their first time walking on a runway. The combination of walking in a large heavy gown and also managing something on their heads could be a challenge if they were too much. So I went to work testing out different materials to create something that was strikingly beautiful and also easy to wear. I tried wooden dowels, wire, chopsticks, all kinds of different things, and finally landed on the idea of using zip ties after riffling through my husbands tool box. The zip ties are super light, I could airbrush them any color I wanted, and they also have a little give to them. Even though they are pointy, they wouldn’t hurt as much as a hard wooden dowel would if you happened to bump into someone while wearing a crown made of them. I don’t want anyone losing an eye!I experimented with all kinds of different patterns and finally came up with a design we loved, and they looked GORGEOUS on the runway. 🙂
Since then I have made countless variations of halo crowns using zip ties as the base. They take quite a while to make, and I’m sure I will end up with carpal tunnel syndrome from hand tying them, but this unusual material just works great for headpieces!
Handmade with love in my Southern California studio.
